Did you ever do something so well, you couldn’t believe it? You have your subconscious mind to thank for. Sometimes it works, sometimes, it doesn’t. So how can we use this thing, the unconscious mind? Picture yourself doing amazing things, performing at peak level and overcoming all kinds of obstacles. Never mind the how, just focus on the what and your subconscious mind will get to work. From the outside this might look like you are just a lazy daydreamer – but this technique is anything but lazy. Active dreaming is like karate with yourself and your future, a dance in our minds. Harness your subconscious mind, feed it with outcomes and positive emotion, it will find a way to make incredible things happen. Trust the Force, Luke!

Don’t complain! Really?

Nobody wants to help a complainer. So how can we deal with the bad things we want to complain about? I confess that I like to complain sometimes, about the weather, other people, the economy and current affairs. It never helps, all a complaint achieves is that it pollutes the environment. It reduces the room temperature to freezing point. So, here is a simple trick. When you feel like complaining add some analysis to the complaint. Put some thought into the why of your complaint and – snap! Like magic, the complaint will transform into an assessment. It will open new thoughts and new perspectives. People complain about bad weather? Just imagine a world without rain and you got yourself a new outlook. People complain about too much work, not enough sleep, rising prices? There is a grain of wisdom deep inside every complaint that, once uncovered, is a good steps towards the solution.

It is just when a complaint is nothing but a complaint that we waste our time. But we need to trust our instincts, our guts. The impulse to complain is a valuable signal. We just found a topic that is worth investigating.

Handwriting is key!

This might also be another journaling worry. Do you think your handwriting isn’t all that pretty? Are you self conscious? Don’t be! A journal is your private space where you can practice. It is the place to forgive yourself for not being a calligrapher. You don’t have to be! The point about handwriting is that it conveys a lot of information. When you revisit your journal in the future, the way you wrote will tell a lot about your state of mind, were you in a hurry? Were you bored or totally focused? Your handwriting will tell.

Love the details!

There is so much fun to be had when it comes to writing a diary. Decorate the pages, rough it up! Paste photos and clippings onto the pages. Design, sketch, draw and illustrate. Write in different styles using different writing tools. All of this can unlock your inner genius and allow you to create your own style. This is what journaling is all about: Provide your inner genius with a playground.

Money Money Money!

It does make the world go round and there is no reason not to talk about it with your kid. But how? I recommend to discuss prices with your child. As soon as they ask for new toys or stuff, let them take a look at the prices! Write them down and do some math: How can you afford this thing? A diary is a great tool to teach some math and to teach your kid to set goals and pursue them.

Journaling Worry #3 Time!

I don’t have enough time to keep a journal!” Well, of course you do! All you need is a couple of minutes every day. The best way to get there is to create a habit like a defined moment during your day when you sit down to write. It doesn’t even have to be in full sentences. You can form a new habit by one thing alone: execution! Sit down for a number of days, I recommend 21, which equals three weeks and after that journaling will have become a part of your life. Then the magic begins!

A way to learn better!

Write down your daily aha-moments and come back to read again and again. A journal is a tool and repetition is the best way to remember better. So here comes another way to use a journal: write down things you want to learn, write down goals and things you want to achieve. This way you can provide your brain with tasks and program yourself to pursue your goals on a daily basis. Start with something simple, like facts or factoids that you want to learn, write them down repeatedly until you remember them, it also works well with jokes you want to remember but somehow, can’t.

Discuss Aha-Moments

You want to teach your children to value aha-moments because this is where the magic happens. Great inventions started as aha-moments, EUREKA! So better keep track of them, because, as the saying goes, a short pencil is better than a long memory. So what can you do with a toddler or a kid who can’t read or write yet? Draw a picture! Create some symbolism and honour this special moment with a bit of design on paper. After that, ask your child to color that design with you.

Write the best book you ever read

A journal can be the best book you ever read because your brain marinade itself in dopamine when you revisit positive things that happened to you. This is why journalling really makes people happy. Focus on things that your are grateful for, things you learned! Things you understand better and on the great people you meet every day.
